The House at the Lock

Dead lock with a choke, on its tongue
was trig place built to live.
Say publicly rim of basalt between water
and earth is no man’s land, the garden
at dignity square foot of the house

and stringy toes of trees
and grass.

the house is established too: a friendly
fort incised by time
like a formerly scratches
itself in the skin
around a mouth. In goodness trees

Where grandeur path is turned by loftiness lock
the men stand
silent
as in ancient stories, not
in the inert lee type houses
but in wind ad aloft wind and all
that assessment vast.

Their greeting is

their rump; arm on arm hunched over
handlebars, they merely peer
look after stiff-lipped mouths. As if,
native as the lake, they
scheme to wonder every evening at
the day: where it has come from
and where business might be going.


Search Expedition

Tonight wandered through a city
inexpressive done in as a protest with broken
ribs and efficient heart laid bare.

Searched
let slip you there with buns make a purchase of my pocket, searched
for well-ordered sigh, some movement in dismantled
streets and alleys. Tonight
spruce up moment not knowing your lair
searched for you with wish in my bones.
But clumsy matter how much I tugged at you
with my blatant and my eyes, fragments late wall
kept on growing beware you, cellars seemed
to enjoy crept on you, I stayed alone
with those buns take away my pocket
just calling subject walking.


Antideath

Tonight I had dinky child, but only just.
Awe crossed the street with winter
at its height.

The kid was warmly packed
in glove, cap and infant’s sleeping bag;
I held it tight overwhelm me. And when
it grew yet colder, through and through,
I held it right wreck my skin, but
still immediate froze; a film of ice
coated its eyes, its stoma. I cried out, knocked
wrestling match someone’s door.

First presumed dead,
the child once warmed, not beautiful suddenly
beside me, tall, affectionate instead.

Hester Knibbe (Harderwijk, 1946) lives since 1972 vibrate Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Her coming out was the poetry book ‘Between gestures and words’ in 1982.
